Green and sustainable port strategies: Port of Gdansk and Port of Split – A RethinkBlue scientific mission

Dr Małgorzata Bielenia was hosted at University of Split (Faculty of Maritime Studies) in Croatiaas part of a Rethink Blue short term scientific mission, earlier this year.

Dr Bieliena emphasized that the STSM was instrumental in fostering professional development, research excellence, and knowledge exchange between the host institution, led by Prof. Eli Marušić, and participating academics and administrators from Split. The collaboration builds upon the success of the 1st RethinkBlue Conference, held in Zadar, Croatia (23–25 April 2024), which was a pivotal event in uniting international experts in the field of maritime and blue economy studies.

During the STSM, the research focused on green and environmentally sustainable port operations and strategies. The team – including Małgorzata Bielenia and Prof. Eli Marušić – developed a framework to assess green and environmental indicators in ports and is currently conducting qualitative interviews with managerial and administrative staff at seaports in the Baltic and Adriatic regions.

The mission also provided opportunities for academic engagement with other researchers.
