Our webinar, “RethinkBlue Mentorship Programme – Writing Effective Policy Briefs,” held on 3 July 2025, tackled a critical skill for researchers: how to communicate research effectively to policy audiences through concise, targeted policy briefs.

Policy briefs serve as a bridge between research and policy action, yet writing them effectively requires clarity, precision, and an understanding of the policy environment. The webinar explored what makes a policy brief compelling, how to tailor messages for policymakers, and practical steps for structuring and disseminating briefs within the context of the sustainable Blue Economy.

To lead the discussion, we were joined by two experienced speakers:

Andreea Strachinescu: Head of Unit in MARE.A.1 – Maritime Innovation, Marine Knowledge and Investment (Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, European Commission) Andreea has extensive experience in aligning research outputs with policy needs and facilitating the uptake of innovative practices within the Blue Economy sector. Her insights highlighted what policymakers look for in a brief and how researchers can position their work to support evidence-based decision-making in the maritime domain.

Ralf Doering: Senior Advisor / Deputy Head of Economic Analyses Unit, Institute of Sea Fisheries (Bremerhaven, Germany) / Member of STECF Ralf brings a wealth of expertise from his role at the Institute of Sea Fisheries and as a long-standing member of the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF). His work focuses on the economic analysis of fisheries and marine policies, providing advice to the European Commission on fisheries management and sustainability. Ralf shared practical guidance on communicating complex economic data clearly and ensuring that policy briefs support effective fisheries management and broader Blue Economy policy development.

This webinar forms part of the RethinkBlue Mentorship Programme, equipping early-career researchers with practical skills to ensure their research contributes to shaping a sustainable Blue Economy.
