Structural inequalities in fisheries value chains: Lessons from the Adriatic

Dr Dražen Cepić (Institute for Social Research in Zagreb) was hosted by Dr Liz Drury O’Neill at the Stockholm Resilience Centre from 27 to 31 October 2025, as part of a Rethink Blue short term scientific mission (STSM).

The main objective of this STSM was to collaboratively analyse empirical data on Adriatic fisheries value chains and to develop strategies for connecting these findings to broader Blue Economy debates. Dr Cepić said:

“During the visit, we refined the analytical framework and coding strategies, reviewed the dataset, and explored patterns of structural inequality, market access, and governance relations. Joint discussions focused on framing the analysis in comparative perspective and situating Adriatic insights within global Blue Economy discourses. The STSM also included planning for publications and identifying avenues for follow-up collaboration. In addition, I delivered a brown bag seminar, “Conflict and Compliance in Croatia’s Fisheries Value Chains,” presenting both my research and the goals of the RethinkBlue Action.”
