Killing two birds with one stone: Waste shells as low-cost materials for nutrient and bacteria removal in wastewater: A RethinkBlue scientific mission

Dr. Brakemi Egbedi participated in the 22nd Health Related Water Microbiology Conference (WaterMicro25), Amersfoort, Netherlands, as part of a Rethink Blue short term scientific mission, earlier this year.

The WaterMicro25 conference brought together experts from various disciplines with water as the core focus.

Dr Egbedi emphasised the crucial role of interdisciplinary collaboration and the “one-health” approach in shaping the future of water research and the blue economy.

With the theme “Safe Water in a Changing World”, the event featured keynote lectures, panel discussions, workshops, side events, poster pitches, and technical sessions. The researcher noted that these offered valuable insights into the latest trends in water microbiology, climate change, sanitation, and health-related technologies.

During the poster session, Dr Egbedi presented her own work, sparking discussions with a wide range of participants and receiving constructive feedback.

The conference theme resonates strongly with the objectives of the EU COST Action RethinkBlue, which is organised around five working groups. The conference underlined the importance of rethinking the blue economy so that the “one-health” and “water-health” nexus are fully integrated into its future development.
