Earlier this year, Kurt Rachlitz participated in the Mare Conference, entitled People and the Sea, as part of a Rethink Blue short term scientific mission. He presented during the conference.
Kurt Rachlitz’s presentation was empirically oriented and focused on the knowledge practices required for the production of ecosystem overviews at ICES (the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea). In his words
“I analyzed these knowledge practices using the concept of ‘institutional epistemologies’ developed by Borie et al. 2021. I showed that ICES currently finds itself in a peculiar position. The ecosystem approach is driving the organization to reflect on its knowledge practices. Two scenarios are plausible: (1) the organization transfers its established model of knowledge practices, which has proven itself in stock assessments, to the creation of new ecosystem-based products such as ecosystem overviews; (2) the organization manages to cultivate different – loosely coupled – knowledge practices and thus, on the one hand, continues to rely on a View From Nowhere model (analogous to IPCC) in the area of stock assessments and, on the other hand, relies on a View From Everywhere model (analogous to IPBES) in the area of ecosystem overviews.”
